Naar de beurs
Over()moedig kapitalisme...
Een oudere man kwam in de winkel en bekeek vol interesse de afdeling Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ineens draaide hij zich om en vroeg of we ook naar de beurs gaan.
Glunderend vertelde ik hem dat we in 1999 als internetantiquariaat waren begonnen en dat we alle vrienden en bekenden hadden gemaild toen Amazon.com kort daarna wegens financiële problemen uit Nederland vertrok. "De digitale boekenstad - onze officiële bedrijfsnaam - had een revolutie in de markt teweeg gebracht", zo stond in dat mailtje te lezen. Die boodschap herhaalden we nogmaals toen Bertelsmann naar buiten bracht dat ze met het noodlijdende bol.com zou gaan stoppen. "De digitale boekenstad veegt alle concurrentie van de markt", zo kopte ik in die tekst.
Ja, "het gaat goed met onze zaak", beaamde ik dus vol trots tegen de - ondertussen verbaasd kijkende - klant. "Er zijn echter nog geen plannen om met ons bedrijf naar de beurs te gaan."
Verbouwereerd keek de man mij aan. "Eh...", stamelde hij. "Ik bedoelde eigenlijk of u aanwezig bent op de boekenbeurs in Deventer 31 januari".
Met fier opgeheven hoofd - terwijl van binnen mijn ziel was vermorzeld - liet ik de man weten dat wij geen beurzen doen. "Wij hebben onze handen vol aan de winkel en het internet."
Zucht...
